Give me the ball!

Ask any football coach and they will tell you, "The best quarterbacks, when the games on the line, want the ball in their hands." It's a gritty confident instinct that is hard to coach and inevitably leads teams to victory.
I believe the same applies to health. Ask any doctor, and they will tell you, "The best patients, when health is on the line, want to be the captain of their medical voyage." They are the individuals that achieve their health goals.
They take ownership. They ask questions. They take action. When there are knowledge and skills they don't have, they dedicate themselves to acquiring it. Yes they are proactive, inquisitive, and collaborative. They realize that they are the linchpin to health success.
When I look at quarterbacks and patients with these qualities, I ask myself, 'is this confidence or is this hubris?' The answer I've come to find lies in preparation. A sound belief in oneself coming from diligent preparation and clear self assessment, is actual confidence. You’ve worked hard to increase the probability that you can meet and handle whatever comes. Be it a quarterback putting hours in on the practice field, sitting in the film room, and getting those extra session in the gym. Or be it . It is earned.
Hubris, is when you haven’t prepared, yet have the delusion of grandeur that you can handle it. Like Icarus it's not likely to end well.
If you want the ball in your hands I want to work with you. I want to be your coach in this crazy and convoluted field we call medicine and health. I want to see you navigate the field and thrive.
